What is ABS Plastic?
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, usually referred to as ABS plastic, is an opaque thermoplastic that’s known for its resistance to chemicals, heat, and impact. These unique ABS material properties make it the perfect material for applications where surface quality, colorfastness, and luster are required. Because ABS plastic is a thermoplastic material, it can easily be recycled; therefore, it’s not uncommon for ABS plastic to be produced from other types of ABS plastic material.
Standard grades of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene have been specifically developed to meet the requirements of a variety of customers, and can be easily modified by changing the ratio of its three monomers: acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene. Hence, available grades include high and medium impact and high heat resistance and these grades can be changed by adding more or less acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene. Although the raw material is opaque in nature, ABS plastic can easily be colored with pigments or dyes.
There are countless applications for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, including keys on a computer keyboard, power-tool housing, and the plastic face-guard on wall sockets. Other ABS plastic applications include support blocks, machined prototypes, LEGO manufacturing, and structural components. Since the ABS plastic material properties include resistance to corrosive chemicals and physical impacts, it’s a great choice for use in extrusion manufacturing processes and other low-heat situations.
With an extensive history of being one of the premier abs plastic manufacturers, Trim-Lok can manufacturer ABS materials according to your unique specifications. This includes manufacturing fire retardant plastics which may be produced either by the inclusion of fire retardant additives or by blending the acrylonitrile butadiene styrene with PVC. All Trim-Lok products, including those manufactured in ABS plastics, are proudly made in America using only the highest quality materials available on the market.
